Cannel coal microscope thin section slide shows the organic content typical of this sedimentary rock sedimentary rock. Cannel coal by it’s physical morphology and low mineral content is considered to be a coal but by its texture & organic content considered an oil shale. It is derived from resins, spores, waxes, cutinaceous and corky materials of terrestrial vascular plants laid down in ponds, shallow lakes, swamps and bogs under oxygen-deficient conditions during the Carboniferous Era. Cannel coal is a type of low grade bituminous coal but it typically contains much less fixed carbon. This material was obtained from the Alexander open cast pit in Wigan, Lancashire. The slide is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy, petrological & educational use.
