Specimens of stromatolite, collected from Morocco. Stromatolites are a term used to describe a range of layered sedimentary formations, predominantly created by photosynthesising microorganisms. Fossilised stromatolites are crucial as they record some of the most ancient life. They form in shallow water environments, where sedimentary grains are trapped, bound and cemented in biofilms through the action of microbial lifeforms. Stromatolites can exhibit a range of different patterns and structures. These Stromatolite – Morocco specimens date to the Pre-Cambrian – around 600 million years ago. Each of these specimens has been cut to further highlight the formation. They are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label. We also offer rough Stromatolite specimens from Bolivia which you can view by clicking HERE!
