Specimens of stromatolite, collected from Potosi, Bolivia. These Stromatolites belong to the genus Pucalithus, and date to the Cretaceous period. Stromatolites are a term used to describe a range of layered sedimentary formations, predominantly created by photosynthesising microorganisms. Fossilised stromatolites are crucial as they record some of the most ancient life. Stromatolites are created in shallow water environments, where sedimentary grains are trapped, binded and cemented in biofilms through the action of microbial lifeforms. Stromatolites can exhibit a range of different patterns and structures. These specimens are available in three sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
