Specimens of Epidote from Michigan, USA. In particular, they have been collected from the Laurium Mine, Osceola, Houghton County. It is an abundant rock forming mineral that is most commonly green in colour. These specimens date from the Stenian period, approximetely 1 – 1.2 billion years ago. It forms from either hydrothermal or metamorphic origin, and is particularly common in metamorphosed basalts and gabbros. In those, circumstances, the epidote replaces the plagioclase, pyroxene and olivine. Epidote has no particular industrial uses but is still well liked by collectors due to its distinct green colouration.
