The knitted fabric is carefully crafted using a unique over-gauge technique on low-gauge machines, achieving a perfect balance of softness, thickness, and durability. Made with vibrant, high-quality combed yarn, the socks reveal a rich, colourful pattern as the five hues intertwine beautifully, creating a distinctive and dynamic look. Anonymous Ism was founded in 2002 in Tokyo, Japan, making its first sock collections on 1970s traditional knitting machines which were slow and unreliable, but able to create intricate designs and textures of exceptional quality which was not possible in commercial manufacturing. The machines were rare, with spare parts very hard to find, so Anomymous Ism developed modern alternatives in sock production that could replicate the feel of the old looms and reproduce the traditional Japanese textile techniques without having to worry about machinery parts falling off. The brand continues to manufacture in Japan using sustainable techniques and thoughtful packaging. Its rider (the wrap around the socks) was developed with the Japanese government, its made from Limex (limestone) and will one day go back to being limestone. Anonymous Ism designs reference not only traditional sock-making but also diverse modern sources – marine, military and workwear, to name a few.
