Description Argemone ochroleuca is a species of prickly poppy, a flowering plant native to Mexico. This glaucous, erect single to several stemmed annual, can grow up to 1m in height and has a sticky yellow sap. Commonly known as chicalote or cardo santo, it is used in Mexican folk medicine as an antitussive, anticonvulsant, antidiarrheal, antispasmodic, hypnotic, narcotic, sedative, and analgesic. It is commonly thought to be Argemone mexicana due to it’s same effects, however they are different species. Additionally, it is said to be useful for treating eye infections, eye spots, and dermatoses Common Name. Prickly Poppy; Flowering Thistle. Germination. Sow Argemone ochroleuca seeds just under the surface of a well-draining mix in a sunny spot, keeping them moist and warm at around 18−22∘C until they sprout in 10-14 days.
