Welcome, Ro Theater

Ro TheaterWe are delighted to welcome the Ro Theater as a new associated member of Theatron. The Ro Theater is a contemporary, socially involved and trailblazing theatre company, combining great classics and recently written repertoire, contemporary issues and big stories. The productions are seen by about 65,000 people a year. The theatre is based in the city port of Rotterdam where 173 different nationalities live and work together. It boasts an active and innovative education department that has set new standards in audience engagement. We’re delighted to have them on board!

The Education Department is devoted to introducing young people to theatre and deepening their first experience by preparing them beforehand with a suitable activity. Participants gain insight into themes, characters, design and style. The Ro Theatre invests in creating a new audience that knows how to appreciate theatre as an art form. Activities are not used as a marketing tool, but as a new way to gain the loyalty of a new audience and to convey a passion for theatre. Ro Theater Education meets children, teenagers, students, adults and senior citizens and is able to devise an appropriate programme for each group.

Message from the Ro Theatre

The Ro Theater is very pleased to be one of the associated members of Theatron. These are very interesting times for us:

In December, it was announced that Johan Simons (Munchener Kammerspiele, NT Gent, Ruhrtriennale) will become the artistic director of Theater Rotterdam. From 2017-2020 he is going to lead the four most important companies of the city of Rotterdam: Ro Theater, Wunderbaum, Productiehuis Rotterdam and the main theatre Rotterdamse Schouwburg.

Alize Zandwijk announced that she is going to leave the Ro Theater, from 2017 she will work for different theaters in Germany. In March she’ll present a play of a young playwright Rik van den Bos about a young soldier who returned from the battlefield and doesn’t fit in society anymore.

A new director Sadettin Kirmiziyuz presents a series of performances (over the next four years) inspired by HBO’s The Wire.

Our Education Department is preparing a lot of interesting programs and workshops to engage new audiences for both plays. In May 2015 Ro Theater will present a new performance with +/- 14 talented youngsters. The performance is the result of three different masterclasses provided by the partners of Theater Rotterdam. Different directors and actors work with the youngsters for one evening on a specific theme. This time the youngsters will present a performance about love and relationships.
